Top Notes

The crisp button-down shirt has gone through a creative upgrade and looks more designed than ever. Far beyond its image of being merely part of a tailored suit, the dress shirt has become the epitome of a powerful day-to-day basic. On the condition that it’s slightly off and styled innovatively.

Seen on the runway

Designers seem to have collectively made it their mission this season to show every possible variation of the button-down shirt and completely taking it out of its classic context, resulting in a plethora of artful yet wearable inspiration. Deconstructed, oversized or narrow-waisted, shirts are combined with toned-down bottoms or even bare legs, allowing the focus of the silhouette to be on the top notes.

Translated to the street

Reinventing this fundamental wardrobe staple on a day-to-day basis requires nothing but some avant-garde styling tricks. The oversized shirt becomes more feminine than ever by accentuating the waist with a statement belt or wearing it the off-shoulder-way and subtly showing some sun-kissed skin. Take the look to an edgier level by wearing a corset top over your favourite monocoloured button-down shirt. To achieve a truly captivating silhouette you can even wear one shirt on top of another, so there is absolutely no shame in buying an extra one, just to be sure.
