The Rundown

Natural Browns

It's considered an autumn/winter colour by most, but thanks to fashion's increasing fusion of seasons, brown proves itself as a sunshine neutral with gravitas. Get earthy this SS18 season.

There's a tendency to go bright and bold when the sun comes out, but there's a lot to be said for choosing instead, from the diverse array of natural brown hues. Unlike black, brown is not so much of a heat-magnet, and unlike the more conspicuous colours, it radiates a sense of maturity and calm. The colour of choice for the more cerebral woman, it's no wonder we encountered a gorgeous satin top and floor-length skirt silhouette in a shimmering chocolate hue at Lemaire. At Alberta Ferretti, a romantic jumpsuit had a similar vibe, but then more appropriate for during the day. Natacha Ramsay-Levi's interpretation at Chloé, a long silk tunic worn with cropped trousers and boots, was characteristically tomboyish, yet with feminine confidence that an intense brown colour complements so well. Both Krizia and Marc Jacobs came up with trouser-suit versions in a dark brown, the former executed in smooth, shiny leather and the latter in an Eighties power shoulder pinstripe style. Whichever way you choose to wear it, choose brown to stay cool this summer.
