Blazer of Glory

As the first month of the year rolls on, we've slowly but surely been getting back into office appropriate attire. Follow our easy one-step way to do this: don a hero blazer.

Seen on the runway

As a building block of a woman's wardrobe, blazers are a mainstay in the seasonal (and inter-seasonal) collections in all fashion week cities - year on year. Bent on innovation and newness as fashion may be, some things are just too good to discard. That being said, styling options abound and sartorial twists are welcome devices to update the classic garment. Look to Sies Marjan for a dazzling creased copper version of the belted blazer, and to Delpozo for a cropped one with cape sleeve detailing. Perennial favourites like striped and Prince of Wales-checked blazers were to be found at Gucci as well as Derek Lam and 3.1 Philip Lim, but, in each case worn in unexpected combinations like tulip-hem mini dresses, oriental hats and wide-legged slacks. Count on Victoria Beckham to strip it of all detail and colour: her white blazer pantsuit is the epitome of easy minimalism.

Translated to the streets

Though the blazer-and-jeans look is thought of as typically French (Google French Voguettes and you'll get our drift), it's a look that's undeniably universal, and, by all means, a stellar way to look both elegant and casual. But what we're seeing more and more of is the combination of blazer and wide leg pant, especially a tailored trouser in distinctly different fabrics or prints. Matching but clashing in equal measure. If you'd like to swap the mannish trouser for a ladylike dress, keep a hold of you cover-up too - throwing over a slimline blazer on top of a flowing dress or a top and skirt silhouette works wonders for instantly cool composure.
