About the designer

With a goal to instil Balmain’s successful aesthetic into a wider selection of wardrobes, the French label launched a diffusion line under the handle Pierre Balmain. Carrying the original founder’s name, the younger sister brand was founded in 2011. The main label’s tailored joie de vivre is channelled into more understated designs that feature fresh, clean cuts and a contemporary identity. Although unafraid to sneak in a hint of second-skin tailoring and military touches, the label focusses on casual wear with a condensed price tag. Set aside from Olivier Rousteing’s influences, the label is shaped and structured by an independent group of designers.

Collection autumn/winter 2017

With his signature body-enhancing and richly embroidered designs, Olivier Rousteing abides by Pierre Balmain’s classic influences yet implements contemporary aesthetics in his collections. At this autumn/winter 17 presentation, he experimented by creating silhouettes with a looser fit. Striving for diversity on the runway, Rousteing gathered an army of empowered models who presented extravagant looks featuring a brilliant combination of flowing silks and dark leathers in jungle-inspired animal prints. Ultra-high leather skin-tight boots were paired with cut-out tops cinched by body-con leather waist belts. Silhouettes were richly embellished and embroidered with fringes, gold chains, rivets, studs and mixed fabrics, all of them often featured in one single look. Tie-dye prints and an iconic 90’s wolf print pinned down the rock-grunge aesthetic, combined with warm orange hues, gold tones and pitch-dark black.
