J Brand

The California-based label co-founded by Jeff Rudes and Susie Crippen quickly garnered fame after ushering in the era of skinny jeans. Taking a step back from the label for seven years, Crippen has rejoined the label in December 2016 as creative director.

About the designer

Starting out in 2004 with the quest of designing the perfect pair of skinny jeans, Rudes and Crippen flipped the denim industry upside down with their minimalist, sophisticated designs. When Susie left J Brand, Jeff stayed on and continued to mark the minds of numerous fashion insiders. The denim brand merged their savoir-faire with that of five iconic designers (Christopher Kane, Erdem, Meadham Kirchhoff, Peter Pilotto and Richard Nicoll) in 2010 and showcased a collection titled 5 x 5. By the end of 2012, the go-to brand for jeans was acquired for 80 per cent by Fast Retailing. Last year, Crippen decided to come back to her label, putting her eponymous sports brand on the shelves.

Collection autumn/winter 2017

J Brand’s autumn/winter 2017 presentation was all about the female power wardrobe. The selections of fabrics gave the classic J Brand silhouettes a sumptuous character. Smooth velvet, created in an aubergine and emerald hue, appeared on bottoms this season as well as on camisole tops and jackets. Black coated denim featured a leather-look appeal. The signature grey mid-rise skinny jeans were alternated by corduroy straight cropped and kick-flare designs. The most empowering piece of the collection must have been the high-waist black leather pencil skirt, epitomising this season’s female power message.
